Bambu Lab Filament Manager vs SpoolEase

Bambu Lab Filament Manager is built into Bambu Studio and Bambu Handy for keeping a cloud-synced spool inventory.

SpoolEase is what we built for physical spool workflows around Bambu Lab printers: NFC/RFID identification, scale-based weight updates, storage locations, AMS/external slot workflows, printer monitoring, and optional SpoolEase data inside a Custom Bambu Studio fork.

For a broader guide to choosing systems in this category, see what to look for in a filament manager.

SpoolEase is not affiliated with Bambu Lab.

FAQ

Does Bambu Lab Filament Manager read third-party spools from AMS?

  • No. Bambu Lab documents AMS reading for Bambu Lab RFID-tagged spools. Third-party spools are added manually.
  • SpoolEase support both custom NFC/RFID tags that can be added to any spool as well as using Bambu Lab spools tags and reading them using SpoolEase NFC reader or Bambu Lab AMS

Does Bambu Lab Filament Manager automatically deduct usage for non-Bambu spools?

  • Bambu Lab documents manual add for third-party spools, but not a general automatic tracking workflow for arbitrary non-Bambu spools. Also, its weight calculation is only an estimate and inaccurate as it lacks the ability to actually weigh spools so rely on interesting techniques but inaccurate ones.
  • SpoolEase allows to weigh spools from time to time to get an accurate weight baseline, it considers the empty spool weight, and tracks print consumption at real-time as the print progress, including support for print failures.

Does Bambu Lab Filament Manager work with external spools?

  • Bambu Lab Filament Manager can store manually added spool entries, but the documented AMS read workflow is for Bambu Lab RFID spools. It can't provide the same capabilities for the external feed as a full external-spool tracking workflow and it can't be done because the external feed has no NFC reader.
  • SpoolEase use its NFC reader for external spools support

Can Bambu Lab Filament Manager weigh spools?

  • No. Bambu Lab Filament Manager stores weight information, but it does not weigh spools. Its remaining-weight value is an estimate, even when shown in grams.
  • SpoolEase scale allows weighting spools easily. Just place a spool and press a button and weight is updated automatically.

Does Bambu Lab Filament Manager update remaining weight during a print?

  • No. Bambu Lab documents that Filament Manager remaining weight is not real-time during a print.
  • SpoolEase monitors the print at real time and updates the weight as layers change and filament switch.

Does Bambu Lab Filament Manager require internet?

  • Yes. Bambu Lab documents that adding, editing, deleting, and syncing entries require internet because inventory syncs through Bambu Cloud.
  • SpoolEase works in your local network and doesn't need internet access

Can Bambu Lab Filament Manager entries be used as filament profiles in a Bambu Studio project?

  • No. Bambu Lab documents Filament Manager as a spool inventory dashboard, not as the filament profile editor. Print settings such as temperature, flow, and cooling are managed separately in Bambu Studio filament presets.

Will Bambu Lab Filament Manager duplicate a manually added spool when it is later loaded into AMS?

  • Bambu Lab documents an overwrite prompt for already-seen RFID tags in Bambu Studio 2.7.1 and later. That applies to RFID-based matching.
  • Because SpoolEase links a spool record to a tag iw will not import the same spool information twice in case of mistake

Does Bambu Lab Filament Manager track a Bambu RFID spool when it moves between printers or AMS units?

  • Bambu Lab documents RFID-based AMS reading for Bambu Lab spools and Bambu Cloud sync. The intended use is tied to Bambu Lab RFID spool identity, but behavior across multiple printers or AMS units depends on the current Bambu Studio, Bambu Handy, printer, and cloud sync behavior.
  • SpoolEase tracks movement of spools between printers, racks and all is reflected automatically in the inventory

Can SpoolEase always configure AMS and external spool slots?

  • No. SpoolEase automatic slot configuration can be limited by Bambu firmware Authorization Control. Affected workflows may require older firmware or LAN Only mode with Developer Mode.

Does SpoolEase handle workflows Bambu Lab Filament Manager does not cover?

  • Yes. SpoolEase covers NFC-tagged third-party spool workflows, direct scale-based weighing, storage locations, external spool workflows, multiple printers and AMS monitoring, and optional Custom Bambu Studio integration features not available with Bambu Filament Manager.

Do SpoolEase Custom Bambu Studio features work in standard Bambu Studio?

  • No. Custom Bambu Studio features require the SpoolEase Custom Bambu Studio fork, not the standard Bambu Studio release.
